typique

On this, an average Thursday as a proud boarding school workhorse, I endured and enjoyed the following schedule:

8:00am-2:00pm
Taught my five classes. Most intense were the two senior English sections, in which we sprinted delicately through the last half of section III of Heart of Darkness. While I fear I often over-explained and guided the students through the hazy, evanescent passages of Marlowe's narration, the last week or so has been an extended payoff. They're really reading the novel on Conrad's terms and seeing the fog for what it is. We got to "the horror" and beyond. With the freshmen, I laid the groundwork for Hemingway's style and thematics in Old Man.... We talked about the great Dimaggio and Manolin fearing the Tigers of Detroit, about Santiago's undefeated eyes, about the peaceful lions and their suggestion of heaven (a student's observation). Creative writing saw us complete scene four of the ridiculous science-fiction summer camp legal drama slasher script.

2:10-2:15
Back to room. Sudden Scribblers literary magazine proof review, call to publisher with a few mistakes, message left.

2:16-2:19
Power nap part one.

2:19-2:23
Phone conversation with publisher. Corrections communicated.

2:23-2:50
Power nap suite.

2:51-2:53
Cell connection to love.

2:55-7:15
Gather equipment, gather players, load bus. Travel to away game, warm up, play game. Maintain lead but slip occasionally. Coach and joke with coach. Be happy and then get cold in the wind (even though the week has been gripped in humidity). Win 18-12. Take home members of School Talent Show rushedly after final out; squeeze them in my go-kart Hyundai and shout along to 80s comp. Consume fast food on the road, cruise back into the School.

7:15-8:00
Gather requisite material: baggy jeans I never wore, favorite black zip-up (thanks amanda), rap lyrics, get pumped listening to "Girlfriend in a Coma" twice, again.

8:10-10:20
Participate in School Talent show. Rehearse with Amanda's six grade drama students for abridged Hamlet as Ghost Hamlet. Get pumped with colleage/friend Beerose for our rap performance (printed below later). Perform, fuck up a bit but still represent the skillz and luv.

10:30-11:30
Relax with pale ale and Most Extreme Challenge.

11:30-12:00
Write both quizzes for tomorrow, the last two of the year. Tear.

12:00-12:30
Write lame blog because it's been too long since...

bought on stolen wine
and that was the first step
you knew very well
what was coming next
